Microsoft support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020 — see the note below
People still buy Windows 7 for one reason: something they depend on only runs on it. A CNC controller, a laboratory instrument, a piece of design software with a dongle, an in-house application whose author retired a decade ago. If that is you, this is a genuine, activatable Windows 7 Professional license, and it will do exactly what you need.
What Professional gives you over Home Premium
Domain join — Home Premium cannot join an Active Directory domain at all.
Remote Desktop hosting, so you can connect in rather than only out.
Encrypting File System and backup to a network location.
Windows XP Mode support, which for some legacy applications is the entire reason the machine exists.
Please read before you buy: Microsoft support status
Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. The software still installs, activates and runs exactly as before, and your license does not expire — but Microsoft no longer issues security updates for it. We would rather tell you that plainly than have you find out afterwards.
Paid Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 Professional ran for three further years and ended on January 10, 2023. There is no remaining update path of any kind. We are not going to dress that up.
Windows 7 Professional still has real uses: a machine running instrument, manufacturing or laboratory software that was never ported; a legacy application that will not run on anything newer; an offline workstation; a retrocomputing build. For any of those it works exactly as it always did. It should not be used for general internet browsing, email or anything touching payment or personal data — and most current browsers no longer support it either.

System requirements
Microsoft no longer publishes a system requirements page for Windows 7, so rather than quote figures we cannot source, here is what matters in practice: Windows 7 was designed for hardware of its era and will run on almost anything made since. The real constraints today are driver availability and the fact that the operating system receives no security updates.
If you need exact minimums for a specific deployment, ask us and we will work through it with you rather than guess.
Download instructions
Open the email from Vaneyo containing your license key — it arrives within minutes of purchase. Check your spam folder if it is not in the inbox.
Go to Microsoft’s official download page at microsoft.com/software-download and pick the release you are installing.
Choose your route: the Installation Assistant to upgrade the PC you are sitting at, or the Media Creation Tool or ISO for a clean install from USB.
For a USB install, use an empty 8 GB or larger drive — the tool erases it.
The Windows installation media is the same for every edition; your key decides which edition activates.
Installation and activation
Upgrading an existing PC
Run the Installation Assistant and let it check the hardware and download Windows. Your files and applications are kept.
When it finishes, go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter your 25-character key.
Clean installation
Boot from the USB drive, selecting it in the firmware boot menu if necessary.
Choose your language and keyboard, then Install now.
Enter your product key when prompted and select the matching edition — it must match the license you bought.
Accept the license terms, choose Custom: Install Windows only, and pick the target disk. A clean install erases that disk, so back up first.
Finish setup, then confirm under Settings → System → Activation that Windows reports as activated.
If anything stalls, contact us — installation support is included with every order.
Compatibility
Hardware: almost anything built from the late 2000s onward. Very new hardware is the problem rather than old — recent chipsets, NVMe controllers and USB 3 ports frequently have no Windows 7 drivers.
Software: runs Office 2010, 2013 and in many cases Office 2016, plus the legacy applications that are usually the reason for the purchase.
Browsers: current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox no longer support Windows 7. Plan for this machine not to browse the web.
Networks: joins Active Directory domains, though modern domain controllers may require configuration changes to accept it.
Not suitable for: internet-facing use, email, online banking, or handling payment or personal data.
How it compares
Windows 7 Professional vs Home Premium — Professional adds domain join, Remote Desktop hosting, Encrypting File System, network backup and Windows XP Mode. Home Premium has none of these.
Windows 7 Professional vs Ultimate — Ultimate adds BitLocker and the full set of display languages on top of Professional. Unless you need drive encryption, Professional covers the same ground.
Windows 7 vs Windows 10 — if the legacy application will run on Windows 10, buy Windows 10 instead. It is a far better starting point even though it is also out of support, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 is still receiving security updates until January 2027. Windows 7 is for the cases where nothing newer works.
Not for general internet use. It has received no security updates since January 2020, and the paid Extended Security Update program ended in January 2023. It is appropriate for offline machines and for hardware running legacy software that cannot move, and not much else.
What is the difference between Windows 7 Professional and Home Premium?
Professional adds Active Directory domain join, Remote Desktop hosting, Encrypting File System, backup to network locations and Windows XP Mode.
Will Windows 7 install on a new computer?
Often not. Recent chipsets, NVMe storage controllers and USB 3 ports frequently have no Windows 7 drivers, and some modern firmware will not boot it at all. Windows 7 is best matched to hardware of its own era.
Can I still browse the web on it?
Not well. Current versions of Chrome, Edge and Firefox have dropped Windows 7 support. Treat this as a machine for a specific application, not a general-purpose PC.
Why are there no system requirements listed?
Because Microsoft no longer publishes them, and we will not invent figures. If you need exact minimums for a particular deployment, ask us and we will work through it with you.
Is this a subscription or a one-time payment?
A one-time payment. You receive a permanent license key with no recurring charges. It stays valid and Windows keeps working for as long as the product is not uninstalled or deactivated.
Is Windows 7 still supported by Microsoft?
No. Microsoft ended support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. It still installs, activates and runs, and your license does not expire, but there are no further security updates. If you need software in active support, we will point you at a current release.
Is the license genuine?
Yes. This is a genuine Microsoft license key with full activation support. Vaneyo is an authorized reseller and holds a Microsoft partnership certificate.
When will I receive my key?
Within minutes of purchase, by email. Check your spam or junk folder if it has not arrived, and contact us if you still cannot find it.
How many computers can I use this key on?
One. The license activates a single machine. Additional machines need additional licenses.
Can I move the license to another computer later?
No. This is a retail key tied to the machine it activates. If the computer or its hardware changes, a new key is required. If you expect to change machines often, ask us about our bind license products instead.
What if the installation does not work?
Contact us. Our Installation Warranty means we guarantee the installation will work correctly, and our team will help until it does.
