Why the 2019 release specifically
It is stable and well documented. Six years of accumulated answers to every problem you are likely to hit.
It targets older frameworks comfortably. If you maintain .NET Framework applications or older C++ projects, 2019 is often a better fit than the current release.
Perpetual, not subscription. A Visual Studio subscription stops when you stop paying. This does not.
One thing to know about Visual Studio support dates
Microsoft services only the final baseline of a Visual Studio release. For Visual Studio 2019 that is version 16.11, which is supported to April 11, 2029. Earlier 2019 baselines — 16.0, 16.4, 16.7, 16.9 — reached their end dates years ago. In practice this means: install, then update to the latest 16.11 servicing release, and you are covered.

Download the installer from Microsoft at visualstudio.microsoft.com/downloads, choosing the matching edition and version.
Run the bootstrapper. It downloads the rest during installation, so keep the machine online.
Installation and activation
Run the installer and choose the workloads you need — .NET desktop, ASP.NET, C++, mobile, data tools and so on. You can add more later.
Let the installation finish. A typical selection takes 20–50 GB.
Launch Visual Studio.
Go to Help → Register Product, then Unlock with a Product Key, and enter your 25-character key.
Confirm under Help → About Microsoft Visual Studio, which shows the edition and license state.
You can install and use Visual Studio for a trial period before entering the key, so there is no rush at step 4 — but do not leave it until the trial expires mid-project.
Compatibility
Operating system: Microsoft currently lists Windows 11, and Windows Server 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2016. Do not assume Windows 7 or 8.1 support — those entries have been removed from Microsoft’s requirements page.
Architecture: 64-bit recommended. ARM is not supported by this release.
Frameworks: targets .NET Framework and .NET Core / .NET 5 era runtimes; newer .NET versions may require Visual Studio 2022.

Professional vs Community — Community is free but its license is restricted to individuals, open-source work, and small organizations. Professional carries no such restriction, which is the reason most businesses buy it.
