A note on Visual Studio support dates
Microsoft services only the final baseline of a Visual Studio release, not every version of it. In practice that means: install, then update to the latest servicing release of that baseline, and you are covered to the extended support date. Download the installer from Microsoft at visualstudio.microsoft.com/downloads, choosing the matching edition and version.
Run the bootstrapper. It downloads the rest during installation, so keep the machine online.
Installation and activation
Run the installer and choose the workloads you need — .NET desktop, ASP.NET, C++, mobile, data tools and so on. You can add more later.
Let the installation finish. A typical selection takes 20–50 GB.
Launch Visual Studio.
Go to Help → Register Product, then Unlock with a Product Key, and enter your 25-character key.
Confirm under Help → About Microsoft Visual Studio, which shows the edition and license state.
You can install and use Visual Studio for a trial period before entering the key, so there is no rush at step 4 — but do not leave it until the trial expires mid-project.

Professional vs Community — the software is close; the license is not. Community is restricted to individuals, open-source projects and small organizations. Professional carries no such restriction, which is why businesses buy it.
Which version? Visual Studio 2022 is a 64-bit application, handles very large solutions better, supports current .NET releases and ARM64, and is supported to January 2032. Visual Studio 2019 runs to April 2029 and 2017 to April 2027 — both better suited to maintaining older .NET Framework and C++ work.
