Go to Microsoft’s official download page at microsoft.com/software-download and pick the release you are installing.
Choose your route: the Installation Assistant to upgrade the PC you are sitting at, or the Media Creation Tool or ISO for a clean install from USB.
For a USB install, use an empty 8 GB or larger drive — the tool erases it.
The Windows installation media is the same for every edition; your key decides which edition activates.
Installation and activation
Upgrading an existing PC
Run the Installation Assistant and let it check the hardware and download Windows. Your files and applications are kept.
When it finishes, go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter your 25-character key.
Clean installation
Boot from the USB drive, selecting it in the firmware boot menu if necessary.
Choose your language and keyboard, then Install now.
Enter your product key when prompted and select the matching edition — it must match the license you bought.
Accept the license terms, choose Custom: Install Windows only, and pick the target disk. A clean install erases that disk, so back up first.
Finish setup, then confirm under Settings → System → Activation that Windows reports as activated.

Compatibility
Starting point: an activated Windows 10 Home installation. This key will not install Windows from scratch.
Hardware: no new requirements — if the machine runs Windows 10 Home it will run Windows 10 Pro.
Networks: after the upgrade the PC can join Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.
Not for: Windows 11 Home machines — those need the Windows 11 Pro upgrade key instead.
How it compares
Upgrade key vs a full Windows 10 Pro license — the upgrade key is cheaper and much less work, but only applies to a PC already running activated Windows 10 Home. For a clean install, buy the full license.
Upgrading to Windows 10 Pro vs moving to Windows 11 Pro — worth asking before you buy. If the hardware meets the Windows 11 requirements, a Windows 11 Pro license gives you the same features on a supported operating system. This upgrade is the right answer when the machine has to stay on Windows 10.
Upgrade vs LTSC — if the real goal is a Windows 10 machine that still receives security updates, neither Home nor Pro provides that. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 does, until January 2027.
