SQL Server 2022 Enterprise removes the Standard edition’s ceilings. Compute and memory are limited only by the operating system, and it unlocks the availability and maintenance features that production databases with real uptime requirements need: Always On availability groups, online index create and rebuild, online schema change, and resumable online index rebuilds.
Why this edition
No compute or memory cap — the operating system is the only limit.
Always On availability groups, with readable secondaries and multi-database failover.
Online index and schema operations, so maintenance does not require a maintenance window.
Supported to January 12, 2033.
How SQL Server is licensed
Microsoft licenses SQL Server either per core or under the older Server plus Client Access License model. The per-core model is the one most deployments use today; the Server+CAL model is capped at 20 cores per instance for Enterprise and Microsoft states it is no longer available for new agreements. Tell us your processor and core count and how the server will be accessed, and we will make sure what you buy matches how you intend to run it.

This is a retail key for one server. It activates the machine you install it on; if that computer or its hardware changes later, a new key is needed.

Download instructions
Open the email from Vaneyo containing your license key — it arrives within minutes of purchase.
Download the installation media from Microsoft’s download pages at microsoft.com/sql-server/sql-server-downloads, or from the Volume Licensing Service Center if you have an account. The evaluation media and the licensed media are the same build.
Mount the ISO or run the downloaded installer.
Installation and activation
Run setup.exe and choose New SQL Server stand-alone installation.
When Setup asks for the edition, choose Enter the product key and type your 25-character key. This is the step that sets the edition, so the key must match the edition you intend to run.
Accept the license terms and let the rule checks run.
Select the features you need — the Database Engine at minimum.
Configure the instance name, service accounts and authentication mode, then let Setup complete.
Confirm the result by connecting with SQL Server Management Studio and running SELECT @@VERSION, which reports the edition and build.
Install SQL Server Management Studio separately — it is a free download and is no longer bundled with the engine.
Compatibility
Operating system: Windows Server or Windows client, per the version requirements above. SQL Server is x64 only — there is no 32-bit installation.
Management: SQL Server Management Studio is a separate free download and is no longer bundled with the engine.
Clients: connects from .NET, Java, Python, PHP and ODBC/JDBC applications, Power BI, Excel and Reporting Services.
Virtualization: runs on Hyper-V, VMware and other mainstream hypervisors, subject to the licensing rules for virtual cores.
Upgrades: databases from earlier SQL Server versions attach and upgrade in place, subject to the supported compatibility levels.
How it compares
Standard vs Enterprise — the limits Microsoft publishes are identical across the 2016, 2019 and 2022 releases. Standard is capped at the lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores per Database Engine instance, with 128 GB of buffer pool memory and 32 GB each for columnstore cache and memory-optimised data. Enterprise is limited only by the operating system. On features, Enterprise adds Always On availability groups, online index create and rebuild, online schema change and resumable online index rebuilds; Standard gets basic availability groups — one database per group, with a non-readable secondary.
One thing that is frequently misstated: maximum database size is 524 PB on Standard, Enterprise and Web alike. Database size is not what separates the editions. The 10 GB cap belongs to Express.
Which version? SQL Server 2022 is supported to January 2033, 2019 to January 2030, and 2016 reached the end of extended support in July 2026 — it is now covered only by paid Extended Security Updates. Match the version to how long the server needs to live and to what your applications are certified against.
What is the difference between SQL Server Standard and Enterprise?
Standard is capped at the lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory; Enterprise is limited only by the operating system. Enterprise also adds Always On availability groups, online index operations and resumable online index rebuilds. Standard gets basic availability groups instead.
Is the maximum database size different between editions?
No, and this is a common misconception. Maximum database size is 524 PB on Standard, Enterprise and Web alike. Only Express is capped, at 10 GB.
How is SQL Server licensed?
Either per physical core, or under the older Server plus Client Access License model. Server+CAL is capped at 20 cores per instance for Enterprise and Microsoft states it is closed to new agreements. Tell us your hardware and we will check which applies.
Is SQL Server Management Studio included?
No. SSMS is a separate free download from Microsoft and has not shipped with the engine for several releases.
Is this a subscription or a one-time payment?
A one-time payment. You receive a permanent license key with no recurring charges. It stays valid and SQL Server keeps working for as long as the product is not uninstalled or deactivated.
Is the license genuine?
Yes. This is a genuine Microsoft license key with full activation support. Vaneyo is an authorized reseller and holds a Microsoft partnership certificate.
When will I receive my key?
Within minutes of purchase, by email. Check your spam or junk folder if it has not arrived, and contact us if you still cannot find it.
How many servers does this cover?
One server. Additional servers need additional licenses.
Can I move the license to another computer later?
No. This is a retail key tied to the machine it activates. If the computer or its hardware changes, a new key is required. If you expect to change machines often, ask us about our bind license products instead.
What if the installation does not work?
Contact us. Our Installation Warranty means we guarantee the installation will work correctly, and our team will help until it does.
